A screen reader is an application that allows blind and visually impaired the ability to access information on their computer screen either by voice output or through braille or both. By using a keyboard, the computer users are able to function within many applications and operating systems.
Many of today's screen readers, besides their support for hardware dedicated synthesizers, have their own software speech synthesizers that run on a computer sound card and can support several different languages.
Most screen readers are highly customizable programs. There are many options that can be changed. The users can adjust such things as voice rate, pitch and the amount of punctuation being spoken etc.
Screen readers enable their users to browse the Internet, send email and create and read documents just by using navigational keystrokes.
